It might seem easier to just check their phone, and I get the temptation. But speaking from experience, that path can do a number on your own mental health. The paranoia and the pit in your stomach don’t go away, even if you find what you’re looking for. It’s a heavy burden to carry. Your suggestion of a PI or even just talking to a lawyer is a much cleaner way to get answers without losing a piece of yourself in the process.
