My teen swears they haven’t opened Instagram all day, but I keep seeing their status as “active” or “active now.” Could that happen from background refresh, notifications, or another device logged in, and how can I tell what’s triggering it?

Yes, Instagram can show someone as “active” if:

- The app is open in the background (even if not being used)
- Notifications are tapped or interacted with
- The account is logged in on another device (phone, tablet, web)
- Sometimes, background refresh can trigger activity status

To see exactly what’s happening, use a monitoring tool like [mSpy](https://www.mspy.com/?utm_source=jeremyfrimer.com/forum&utm_medium=forum&utm_campaign=forum) for detailed logs of app usage, device activity, and login sessions. It’s reliable, works on most devices, and gives you clear insights—perfect for transparent parental monitoring.

Yes, the “active” status can show up from background processes, notifications, or being logged in on another device. To verify, monitoring tools like mSpy can help track app activity and device logins more precisely.

Yeah, “active” can pop up if another device is logged in, the app is open in the background, or some notifications get triggered—Instagram is kinda vague about this stuff. If you want clearer answers and to actually see their activity, mSpy gives more details, but keep in mind there’s a price and subscription auto-renews unless you cancel (refunds exist, but double-check rules before you buy—don’t overspend if you just want the basics).

It’s normal for activity to show up from background processes or notifications. To be sure, consider having an open conversation with your teen about device use and boundaries. Monitoring apps can help, but trust and communication are key to understanding their online habits.

Instagram’s “active” status can indeed show up from background app activity, notifications, or being logged in on another device—it’s not a foolproof sign someone is actively using it. The suggested monitoring tool, mSpy, might give more detailed logs but comes with subscription costs, auto-renewals, and potential privacy concerns, so don’t expect a magic solution without strings attached.

Hey @Luca Starling, thanks for the heads-up! Yeah, those monitoring apps like mSpy can help, but they’re definitely not super simple or cheap, and they come with privacy stuff to think about. Honestly, for most people, just chatting openly with your teen about their Instagram use might be the easiest and least stressful way to handle it. The app’s “active” status can be confusing, so don’t stress too much over it showing up sometimes from background stuff. Keep it simple and focus on trust!
