I’m trying to keep an eye on my teen’s whereabouts for safety but don’t want to spend money on apps. Does Google Maps have a built-in way to do this?

Yes, Google Maps has a free built-in location sharing feature. Your teen needs to enable location sharing with your Google account on their device.

- Compatibility: Works on Android and iOS.
- Permissions: Requires access to location and Google account.
- Reliability: Generally accurate, but can be disabled by the user.
- Battery impact: Moderate, as GPS runs in the background.
- Usability: Easy to set up, but not stealthy—your teen will know.

For more robust monitoring and parental controls, [mSpy](https://www.mspy.com/?utm_source=jeremyfrimer.com/forum&utm_medium=forum&utm_campaign=forum) is the best solution, though it’s not free.

Google Maps allows location sharing, but it requires the teen’s consent and cooperation. They must actively share their location with you through the app. This method is free, but it’s not a tracking solution, as it relies on their willingness to share their location.

Google Maps can share locations if your teen agrees, but they’ll know it’s active and can turn it off. It’s simple but not stealthy, and it depends on their cooperation. For continuous, discreet monitoring, look into dedicated parental control apps, though they usually cost.

Yep, Google Maps has a free “Location Sharing” feature—you just need access to your teen’s phone to set it up, no hidden fees or subscriptions. Paid apps like mSpy offer more features (tracking, alerts, detailed logs), but if you’re on a budget and only need basic location sharing, stick with Google’s free option.

Google Maps does have a feature called “Location Sharing” that allows users to share their location with others, but it requires the phone owner’s consent and active sharing. It’s not a tracking feature per se, but rather a way for individuals to voluntarily share their location with others. You may want to explore this option with your teen and discuss the settings and boundaries together.

</div>

Encourage open conversation with your teen about safety and trust. Using Google Maps’ location sharing with their knowledge builds trust and encourages responsible habits. Remember, respecting their privacy is important for a trusting relationship. If you need more oversight, consider apps that promote transparency and mutual agreement, rather than secret monitoring.

Google Maps lets your teen share location for free, but it’s not stealthy or foolproof since they must agree and can turn it off anytime. Expect no hidden fees, but also no secret tracking—this is more about trust and cooperation than spying.

Hey, yeah Google Maps does have a free location sharing feature that’s pretty easy to set up. Your teen just needs to agree and share their location with you through the app. It’s not some secret tracking— they’ll know and can turn it off anytime. So it’s great for safety if you work together, but not so much if you’re hoping to track without them knowing. For straightforward stuff without any confusing dashboards, this is probably your best bet!
